lispy-grimaljin:

hot take: Coyote Peterson’s/Brave Wilderness’s insect sting videos have increased entomophobia across the world, and did not spread proper awareness of insects for how they truly are, especially for hymenopterans.

theload asked:

Could you post a list of the regional French dragons?

a-book-of-creatures Answer:

There’s lots and I need to make a complete list, but off the top of my head:

The Tarasque of Tarascon

image

The Grand’Goule (Big Mouth) of Poitiers

image

The Grand Bailla of Reims

image

The Graoully of Metz

image

The Chair-salée (Salted Meat) of Troyes

image

The Gargouille (Gargoyle) of Rouen (the gargoyle below is from Rouen but is not necessarily *the* Gargouille)

image

The Bouzouc of Berlaimont

image

The Drac of Beaucaire

image

And this lovely modern-day dragon that descended on Calais

And that’s not even going into smaller and viler nuisances like the Dard, the Arassas, the Codrille…

The Conquering the Earth line was made by Schleich to show the success of dinosaurs, how they spread across all corners of the globe over the span of the Mesozoic

A model of Tawa hallae was added to show their humble beginnings during the Triassic

Alongside other early dinosaurs such as Herrerasaurus its discovery in 2004 gives the hypothesis that dinosaurs emerged in Gondwana and spread from there to the rest of the world further support

Tawa is more advanced than Herrerasaurus however not as advanced as Coelophysis which lived alongside Tawa in the area of Ghost Ranch

When Tawa was described by Sterling Nesbitt and colleagues in 2009 its placement on the theropod tree was still unsure but certainly more basal than Coelophysis

Later the same year this was criticized by Mickey Mortimer as she pointed out the analysis didn’t consider comparison with a larger number of early theropods

In 2011 Steve Brusatte and Martin Ezcurra placed it as a primitive theropod and this result was also the case for the large analysis of early dinosaur relations by Paul Barrett, Matthew Baron and David Norman in 2017

The Conquering the Earth Tawa figure is an interesting and unusual choice for Schleich’s lineup and a unique addition for any collector interested in Triassic fauna

The sculpt is nicely done by Vlad Konstantinov and features a couple of primitive feathers on the model’s neck and tail

The warm colours of the simple yet nicely done paint job remind one of the rocks and sand at Ghost Ranch

Tawa not only shared its environment with other early dinosaurs such as Coelophysis but also with strange Triassic creatures such as rauisuchians, competing with them for dominance over the future

Tawa was named after the sun god of the Pueblo people and this dinosaur marked the rising sun shining above the empire of dinosaurs as they conquered the Earth

The Wild Safari Diplodocus released by Safari Ltd. in 2017 is the most anatomically accurate Diplodocus scale model to date

The model is at the popular scale of 1:40 and fits neatly with other models of the same size range

The neck is quite muscular and along its back the model features the keratinous spines known from this animal

Here you can see models of these spines that are currently on display at the Alexander Koenig Research Museum until June 2020

katbutwithak asked:

With viruses and such being on the mind lately, has there ever been any evidence of a plague or something that affected prehistoric animals? If so, how do we know?

stolpergeist Answer:

As far as I know something like that hasn’t been preserved in the fossil record nor could I think of a way this might preserve in a way it is recognizable as a pandemic

That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, the Earth is old after all, it’s just that animals that died under such conditions likely weren’t in areas where they could have fossilized as their bodies would simply have decomposed on the ground

In addition to that it is more likely to spread disease between humans as humans have easier means of transportation, being able to spread viruses further and they live in huge numbers close together

Among our pre-civilization ancestors this may not have occurred as the outbreak of a virus would only wipe one clan out at a time
